Mountaineer Food Bank Partners with Washington Irving Middle School for School Food Pantry Program
New program provides food older students in Harrison County
Gassaway, WV – September 20, 2016- Mountaineer Food Bank recently partnered with Washington Irving Middle School in Clarksburg, WV for the School Food Pantry Program.
The School Food Pantry, while similar to Backpack Programs, focuses on the needs of older students by providing food weekly or in emergency situations. The Harrison County site is the 3rd site to partner with Mountaineer Food Bank. Other school sites in West Virginia are set to open later this year.
“The School Food Pantry really benefits children who may have gotten food from the Backpack Program when they were in elementary school,” says Chad Morrison, Executive Director of Mountaineer Food Bank. “These kids needed the food then, but the only circumstance that changed was where they went to school. They still need the food because their situation hasn’t changed.”
The first delivery of food came in August, while others will come to the school as needed. Washington Irving benefited from a small start-up grant from the Red Nose Day fund, a Feeding America initiative. “Children shouldn't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Partnering with the Mountaineer Food Bank has helped us help our students and for that we are thankful,” said Cindy McFee, the coordinator for the program at WIMS.
Harrison County has a 19.8% child food insecurity rate, or 1 in 5 students that could go hungry. Mountaineer Food Bank is working with the WV Department of Education and Feed to Achieve to organize more programs like this in the state.
Individuals that would like to contribute to the School Food Pantry can send donations to Mountaineer Food Bank at the attention WIMS School Food Pantry or can contact the food bank at 304-364-5518.
